Tasting: Neat
Nose:
Big big peat smoke, bonfire smoke, very ashy, almost tar. Underlying all these smoky notes there is nice touch of sweetness. Some Indian spice I recently discovered from Amrut. Hint of sherry notes, overripe fruit. Dried fruit sweetness. Burnt rubber, antiseptic, exhaust. Newly renovated house smell. Very complex. Some kind of honey ginger, and nutty notes appear after a few minutes. / 22.5
Palate:
Bursting sweetness with the smoke hiding behind the curtain. Liquorice. Surprisingly clean and crisp. Soft as milk. Oh that tropical fruits sweetness is awesome. Smoked guava. Smoked sausages and ham. / 22.5
Finish:
Warm smoke, almost minty, nutty. Dried fruits. Smoke again. Lovely. / 17.0
Balance:
It start off a bit overwhelming with its powerful smoke, but after a while it started to become more and more complex. Wonderful. / 22.0
Price:
It's pretty good value for such a wonderful whisky. / 4.5
Final Verdict:
It's difficult not to love this whisky. Powerful and complex. A very very good Caol Ila, shows great complexity beyond its age. / 88.5
Note: Sorry no photo this time, as this is a sample I brought from a whisky friend.
